| What sets Mount Mary's field education program apart from others is that we require three semesters of well supervised fieldwork (500 hours). Three field placements are offered at two different agencies offering students a greater understanding of social work as a profession and time to develop professional practice skills. Fieldwork provides students with an opportunity to apply their classroom theory to work with actual client populations. A weekly two-hour seminar on campus permits students to share and learn from each others' experiences and to further strengthen their understanding of the strengths as well as injustices of people served by social workers globally.

The social work faculty work with students to determine field placements. Student's personal interests and career goals are seriously considered when determining the most appropriate placement. The faculty also work closely with students and field agencies to ensure that upon graduation every student will have attained practice skills at the entry professional practice level. Field education occurs during the junior and senior years when students spend 12 hours per week in fieldwork at selected local social service, health, education, criminal justice, and other organizations. During this time, students are also enrolled in additional courses.
