News Note: Mount Mary College was recently named on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. In addition to recognizing colleges with excellent service learning programs, this year's awards highlight service programs dedicated to rebuilding areas affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes of 2005. “This new recognition program is designed to increase public awareness of the contributions that college students are making within their local communities and across the country through volunteer service,” according to the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse web site.

This is the first year of the recognition program. It is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development. Find out more -

Service Learning in a Nutshell: Service learning combines community service and in-class learning objectives with the goal that both the recipient and the provider of the service will positively benefit from a mutually meaningful and productive experience. Mission Statement of the Service Learning Program at Mount Mary College: The Service Learning Program at Mount Mary College provides educational experiences emphasizing social justice in partnership with community organizations addressing diverse social needs throughout greater Milwaukee. Inspired by Catholic social teachings, and our founding mothers, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, service-learning at Mount Mary College aims to serve the surrounding community, while fostering the spiritual and intellectual development of students, faculty, staff, and alumnae as we strive for compassionate understanding, knowledge, experience, and positive change for a more just society.
