The Theology Department at Mount Mary
offers a major and a minor in religious studies. However, the State of
Wisconsin as of 2004 does not certify teachers through a religious studies
program. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee
endorses religious studies teachers who have completed an approved college
program for the Catholic Schools.
Master's Program
The Post-Baccalaureate Program is designed as a Certification to Master's
Program. Some of the certification requirements are fulfilled through
graduate coursework that can transfer into the Master
of Arts in Education graduate program. Students who wish to obtain
a master's degree may apply
to the graduate program when they are nearing completion of their
initial certification.
Certification Requirements
Certification requirements can be found at in the Undergraduate
Bulletin within the Education and Mathematics Division section.
Fieldwork/Student
Teaching
All students need to fulfill approximately 100 hours of fieldwork prior
to student teaching. Most of this requirement can be fulfilled through
coursework.
Student teaching is full-time for one semester. Students have two placements
that match the areas of certification and are in the schools all day,
every day, for a full semester.
Students who are employed in a school system may apply to student teach
on-the-job. Permission is dependent on recommendations, availability of
a mentor who meets the Wisconsin
Department of Public Instruction requirements and availability of
appropriate grade level/content area.
Length of Program
It is possible to finish the education coursework in two calendar years,
including summers. However, depending on which certification/minor area
a student selects compared to their previously completed coursework, a
student may need to take a variety of other general education/content
area courses. The Education Department can
evaluate a student’s transcripts to provide a more accurate estimate of
the exact number of courses a student needs to complete along with an
approximate timeline.
Admission to the Education Department
Students will be sent application materials during their first semester
of coursework. It is essential that the student gathers the necessary
documents to meet requirements as soon as they decide to enter the program.
Students in the Post-Baccalaureate Education Certification Program may
take several education courses prior to full admission to the Department
of Education although full admission is required to progress through the
program.
Praxis Exams
The PPST (Praxis I)
exam must be taken or registered for prior to or during the Orientation
to Teaching course. Passing scores on all three sections (reading, writing,
and mathematics) must be on file in the Education Department in order
to be allowed to proceed with education courses at the 300 and above levels.
The Praxis II
(content knowledge) exam must be successfully completed a full semester
before the student teaching semester.
Tuition, Scholarships & Financial Aid
Download the current tuition and fees brochure.
Although post-baccalaureate students already hold a bachelor's degree
they are considered undergraduate students and pay the undergraduate tuition.
Upon acceptance post-baccalaureate education students automatically receive
an academic scholarship based on their previous coursework. Students must
attend classes at Mount Mary full-time to receive the scholarship. Although
most post-baccalaureate students complete their certificate part-time,
if a student does go full-time at any point during the program (including
student teaching), the student will receive his/her scholarship.
Mount Mary also has a corporate grant program with the Archdiocese of
Milwaukee. Employees of the Archdiocese who enroll part-time in Mount
Mary's post-baccalaureate education certificate program will receive the
50% Corporate Grant
toward their tuition. Part-time status is eleven credits or less per semester
for post-baccalaureate study.

All Mount Mary College students are encouraged to apply for financial
aid. Students should file their FAFSA as soon as possible to receive the
most financial aid. You can apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
