Philosophy Scholarships

Each year the philosophy department awards scholarships, thanks to the generosity of alumnae and friends of the department. Scholarships include:

Sister Aloysia Freund Award: This $500 tuition award is given each year to a student who excels in the "Search for Meaning" course. There is no formal application process and the recipient need not be a philosophy major.

John Carmichael Memorial Award: This $500 tuition award is given each year to an outstanding philosophy major. The recipient is chosen by the faculty members of the department. There is no formal application.

"To be honest I initially added the Philosophy major because I thought it was interesting and to maintain a full-time student status while I completed the Occupational Therapy program. However, not long into the program I realized Philosophy had become very important to me and it helped me balance my college experience. Instead of being asked to memorize muscles, nerves and treatment techniques, I was asked to really think about very important things such as true knowledge and the good. I began to look at things differently and enjoyed the thought-provoking classes. As I have now been in the work force I feel that philosophy has helped me work with others by understanding differences in knowledge and opinion, especially in identifying my own and learning to accept others' differences." - Melissa (Wester) Haas, Class of 1999
