| Students majoring in philosophy will be exposed to the thoughtful examination of human experiences. Philosophy emphasizes reasoning, reflection, an awareness of the "big picture," and sensitivity to different experiences, opinions, and beliefs. The Mount Mary College philosophy department offers a flexible, focused approach to philosophy that is especially designed to appeal to the concerns and interests of women. The philosophy major seeks to cultivate an appreciation of the recurring questions of philosophy as well as the ability to approach these questions with intelligence and integrity. The unique character of philosophical questions is that they must be answered for every generation.
Most philosophy majors have two majors, one of philosophy and one in another major within the college. Most usually link philosophy with a career-oriented major, but philosophy has been paired effectively with every other major offered by the College. Simply put, a student who chooses to double major needs to meet the requirements of both curriculums. Philosophy adds an important and résumé-building dimension to any area of study by providing it with intellectual depth, logical skills and ethical focus. "Mount Mary College is a particularly positive place to study philosophy because the professors are friendly, accessible, well-informed, and personable. Philosophy gave me the opportunity to study great thinkers throughout the ages, grapple with important issues of this time, and broaden my compassion as a person. These insights gained greatly enhance my personal and professional life." - Christine Honkavaara, Class of 2003
