Mount Mary College Admissions Director Receives National Recognition
December 6, 2011 -- Rachel Gonnering, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Mount Mary College, received two awards from the National Communication Association (NCA). Gonnering received "Top Panel Award" and "Top Student Award" for her paper, "Training Student Employees to Effectively Apply Customer Service Principles to their Positions of Employment in Higher Education," which was presented at the NCA's 97th Annual Convention held November 17-20 in New Orleans. She co-authored the paper with Becky Mulane, Student Success Advisor at UW-Sheboygan. Read the release.

College Welcomes New Corporate Board Members
December 2, 2011 -- New members have joined Mount Mary College's Corporate Board, President Eileen Schwalbach announced. Comprised of representatives from the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), sponsors of Mount Mary, the Corporate Board has oversight of Mount Mary's Board of Trustees including responsibility for governance matters, financial decisions and institutional leadership. Board members each serve a three-year term. Sister Mary Anne Owens, President of the SSND's Central Pacific Province has been named President of the Corporate Boards. Other new members are:

College Presents Annual Gospel Choir Christmas Concert
November 30, 2011 -- The Mount Mary College Gospel Choir presented its annual Christmas concert on Friday, December 9th. "His Name is Called Emmanuel" was held in Our Lady Chapel located on the second floor of Notre Dame Hall. The event is open to the public and ample free parking is available. Mary Staudenmaier Receives Philanthropy Award from Mount Mary College
November 18, 2011 -- Mary Staudenmaier, a long-time volunteer with the Diocese of Green Bay, received Mount Mary College's "Partner in Philanthropy" Award at the Greater Milwaukee Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals' annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon. The event was held at the Frontier Airlines Center in downtown Milwaukee on November 15th. She received a personalized keepsake at the luncheon in honor of the award and is shown at right with her brother Bill Staudenmaier, a retired Milwaukee attorney, at the National Philanthropy Day luncheon. The Business Journal Highlights Work of Area Presidents, Quotes Dr. Schwalbach
November 18, 2011 -- The Business Journal recently ran two articles in the November 18th issue highlighting President Eileen Schwalbach and the collaborative work of leaders in education across the state.

"Economy forces colleges to increase aid" - Dr. Schwalbach, along with Presidents of various public and private institutions in the state, discuss how the economy is affecting financial aid and enrollment.

"College leaders support education groups" - President Schwalbach is quoted on the education reform work of the Talent Dividend Initiative.

Professor Receives Vatican II Award
November 16, 2011 -- Sister Shawnee Daniels-Sykes, SSND, Ph.D., assistant professor of theology at Mount Mary College, received the Archbishop of Milwaukee's Vatican II Award for Service in Society from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee at a prayer service and awards ceremony held November 8th at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee. Mount Mary Students Win Honors at Run-Up to the Runway Event
November 15, 2011 -- Abby Janiszewski of Oak Creek and Shoua Yang Lee of Sheboygan were selected as co-winners of the 7th Annual RunUp to the Runway event hosted by the Milwaukee Art Museum After Dark on October 21, 2011. The annual event features the best of local designers including Mount Mary College's student fashion designers, area boutiques, salons, artists, and musicians. November 9, 2011 -- Mount Mary College is featured this week twice in The Chronicle of Higher Education, the premier national and international news source for higher education. Both articles position Mount Mary on the national playing field for the first time.

The article, "Milwaukee Strives to Educate a New Kind of Water-Industry Boom Town," discusses the Talent Dividend, which President Schwalbach co-chairs and includes a quote from her.

The second article, "To Get More Graduates, a College Pulls Students Out of Their Comfort Zone," focuses solely on Mount Mary and our Students Building Bridges program. The article highlights the program as one of the innovative ways we're working to meet the needs of our diverse student population. October 26, 2011-- "Within Reach – Many Hands," a new exhibit featuring work by Suzanne Garr, will be on display October 30 – November 26, 2011 in Mount Mary College's Marian Art Gallery. Read the release.

Diversity Program Professional to Speak on Servant Leadership
October 25, 2011 -- Mount Mary College offered a free lecture on diversity issues on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at 7 p.m. in Stiemke Hall. The lecture, "When Success is Significant: the Calling of a Servant Leader" was presented by Antoinette Mensah. With 25 years of professional experience focused on leadership, diversity and youth development, Ms. Mensah believes service is vital to continued personal and professional growth. College Opens New Spaces
October 12, 2011 -- Mount Mary College unveiled its newly renovated spaces on October 12. A new Student Success Center and Learning Commons on the first level of Haggerty Library marked the 30th Anniversary of the library. The space is now home to the Academic Resource Center, Advising and Career Development, and Counseling. New group study areas with soft seating make this a student destination. The college archives and the Promise Program offices also received permanent locations in the renovated lower level of the library.

Students gave the "thumbs up" to the addition of two new Starbucks counters located in the lobby of the library and in the "crossroads" of the lower level Caroline Hall. The "crossroads" is also home to the Barnes and Noble bookstore which opened in August and the Parkway Place dining area which offers additional lounge and gathering space as well as a variety of dining options for students. Master of Science - Counseling program student featured in JSOnline

College Hosts 'Car Fit' for Older Adults
September 19, 2011 -- Mount Mary College hosted 'CarFit,' a free educational program for older adults who are still driving, on Friday, September 30. The program is sponsored by AARP Wisconsin, the American Automobile Association (AAA), the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and Mount Mary College Occupational Therapy students and faculty. College Hosts Women's International League for Peace & Freedom Forum with U.S. State Department
September 14, 2011 -- Mount Mary College Peacebuilding Certificate Program, along with the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom - Milwaukee Branch (WILPF), hosted a community discussion with a representative of the U.S. State Department on Friday, September 23, 2011. The implementation of U.N. Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security was discussed from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Stiemke Hall, located on the second floor of Notre Dame Hall on Mount Mary's campus. Mount Mary College Commemorates 10-Year Anniversary of 9/11
September 2011 -- Mount Mary College marked the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 with signature events that highlighted the impact of transforming injustice and anger into compassionate action and outreach that promote peace.

  • Beyond Belief, a stirring documentary featuring Susan Retik, co-founder of the humanitarian organization Beyond the 11th, 9-11 widow and recipient of the 2010 Presidential Citizens Medal. The film describes how she moved from anger and grief to empowering the widows of Afghanistan.
  • "Beyond 9/11: From Tragedy to Transformation" - Susan Retik, a widow of the 9/11 tragedy and co-founder of Beyond the 11th, was keynote at this powerful lunch event held September 22, 2011, in downtown Milwaukee. Retik promotes a mission that reaches beyond differences of culture and geography to embrace the most essential of connections: humanity. "We strongly believe that education and empowerment are the keys to creating lasting social change."

  • An International Day of Peace Celebration: "Muslim Women as Peacemakers" - featuring a keynote address by Janan Najeeb of the Milwaukee Muslim Women's Coalition. Najeeb is known for her work with the Milwaukee Muslim Women's Coalition. This group works to empower Muslim women through self-advocacy and promote understanding about Islam through interfaith dialogue and activities.
  • Nationwide book read featuring Half the Sky, by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, a bestseller about women's potential to fight global poverty and oppression. Kristof and WuDunn present this worldwide call to action to help eliminate violence against women. Discussions led by Mount Mary College faculty.

Mount Mary opens grounds for the Starving Artists' Show®
August 22, 2011 -- The Mount Mary College Alumnae Association presents the 43rd Annual Starving Artists' Show on Sunday, September 11 from 10:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m., one of the last outdoor shows of the season! The Show features 200+ artists presenting pieces for $100 or less including prints, oils, sketches, photography, jewelry, ceramics, glass, metal work, and textiles. The entrance fee is $5 and parking is free on the Mount Mary College grounds. The Show supports the College's student scholarship fund and campus improvements. Find out more.

Mount Mary College, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin To Partner on AmeriCorps VISTA Program
August 3, 2011 -- Mount Mary College and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin (HCCW) are launching "Empowering Latino Parents," a new program funded by AmeriCorps VISTA. The three-year program, which begins in mid-September, will provide one-on-one English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring for parents and community members in the Milwaukee area who are interested in learning and improving their English language skills. Student Presents Research CSCA Conference
July 21, 2011 -- Chloe Hernandez, a communication major (2012), presented her research findings at the Central States Communication Association Conference (CSCA) this April in Milwaukee. CSCA is a professional, academic organization that promotes the communication discipline.

Delivered in a poster session at the conference, "Hispanic Mothers & the Home: La Verdad Desconocida," discussed research Chloe conducted on single, Hispanic mothers and how they communicate independence to their children. Her research targeted an under-researched population and a rarely touched topic in family communication literature.

The opportunity to present at the CSCA conference was the result of a rigorous application process that involved a pre-conference screening by a panel of academic reviewers. Of all the student papers submitted, only 32% were accepted for presentation at the conference. Chloe was the first Mount Mary student to have a paper accepted to the CSCA conference.

Chloe enjoyed the experience and felt conducting the research was challenging, but worth it. She also enjoyed the opportunity to discuss her research with several scholars, including Lynn Turner, one of the premier family researchers in the field.

Tracy Milkowski Joins Mount Mary College
July 18, 2011 -- Mount Mary College has added Tracy Milkowski as Director of Affinity Programming for the College and the Women’s Leadership Institute.  In her role she will be responsible for developing, designing, implementing, and managing training programs, conferences, meetings, and seminars related to women’s leadership development, as well as special projects for the College’s External Relations division. Mount Mary College Professor Honored as "Champion of the Arts"
June 30, 2011 -- Brad Bernard, a Mount Mary College Assistant Professor of Art, was honored as a “Champion of the Arts” at a celebration hosted by the Milwaukee Public Theatre on June 28 at Milwaukee’s Turner Hall. Brad was among three community leaders who were honored for their efforts to bring together people from throughout our community to enjoy the performing and visual arts. Brad was recognized for his work in creating the annual Community Arts & Funk Festival, which will be held on August 27, 2011on the grounds of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.

Top Honors Earned on the Basketball Court
April 5, 2011 -- Two Mount Mary basketball team members were honored by the NCAA Division III Independents at the close of the 2010-2011 season. Jordan Osley was named "Player of the Year." College Welcomes Award-Winning Author and Poet
March 7, 2011 -- The English department at Mount Mary presented Meg Kearney as its "Writers on Writing" guest, March 16. Kearney is the Director of the Solstice Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing Program at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The event is free and open to the public. Friends of Fashion Event
March 7, 2011 -- The Friends of Fashion hosted a fashion history presentation on March 11. "Signature Style: Four Designers" featured the historical work of Calvin Klein, Charles Kleibacker, Bonnie Cashin, and Ceil Chapman. International Women's Day Recognized in Dynamic Discussion
March 7, 2011 -- Mount Mary College offered a community discussion on Tuesday, March 8. In conjunction with International Women’s Day, also on March 8th, Ann Scholz, SSND, presented, “The State of the World’s Women and Girls.”

Arches Wraps Up More Honors
March 3, 2011 -- The Mount Mary College student news publication, Arches, received fifth place in Best of Show, Publication Website, from the Associated Collegiate Press at the Midwest convention on February 13, 2011. Arches competed against student publications from Midwest colleges and universities of all sizes. See the list of award winners.

College Celebrates Founder's Day
March 3, 2011 -- The Mount Mary College community came together during the annual Founder's Day celebration to honor with SSND Heritage Awards several members who exemplify the SSND charism in their daily work. Read Founders Day: the Weave of Community written by members of the English department specifically for this occasion. The recipients of the SSND Heritage Award were Jan Moebus, Administration, Jane Baldridge, Faculty, Jennifer Looysen, Staff. A special appearance of S. Isaac Jogues Rousseau, SSND brought the crowd to its feet and an unveiling of a portrait of S. Georgeann Krzyanowski, SSND, was a surprise highlight.

Pre-Conference Documentary on High-Pressure Culture in Schools
March 1, 2011 -- Mount Mary College, in collaboration with Great Lakes Teacher Training, hosted a screening of a documentary film about the high-pressure, high-stakes culture that has invaded our schools, "Race to Nowhere," on March 4. The event was a precursor to the Re-Thinking Childhood Conference.

College to Host 25th Annual WIPCS Conference
February 2011 -- Mount Mary College, in collaboration with Alverno College, hosted the 25th Annual Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies Conference on April 8. Can the Globe Go Green – Environmental Sustainability, Peace and the Threats of War featured keynote speaker Randall Amster, professor of peace studies at Prescott College in Arizona and executive director of the Peace and Justice Studies Association. Justice Department Meets at the Courthouse
February 2011 --Students from the "Women, Crime and Justice" class taught by prosecutor Mary Wagner took a field trip to the Milwaukee County Courthouse on February 15 to view domestic violence court in session. The group first met with Milwaukee County's Chief Deputy DA Kent Lovern, and then had the opportunity to view several hearings and meet with Circuit Judges Ellen Brostrom and Mary Kuhnmuench who preside over two of the three branches
specializing in these cases.

Interior Design students compete at NARI Home Improvement Show
February 2011 -- About 20 Interior Design students designed, painted and laid flooring in a sample room on display during the Milwaukee NARI (National Association of Remodeling Industry) Home Improvement Show held February 10-13 at the the State Fair Park. Students from four area colleges entered designs in this year's competition. Read the article from JSOnline.

Mount Mary College Presents Free Diversity Lecture
February 3, 2011 -- Mount Mary College offered a free lecture on diversity issues on February 16. The lecture, “Gun Violence and Protection – Preserving the Community” was presented by Janet Fitch. The program examined the impact of homicides, suicides, domestic violence and mass shootings in the community. Read more.

January 20, 2011 -- Janis Joplin: Rise up Singing, by Ann Angel, M.F.A., was selected as the winner of the 2011 Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Award for Excellence in Nonfiction. Released January 20.

Mount Mary College President Named Recipient of “Women Putting Their Stamp on Milwaukee” Award
January 16, 2011 -- Dr. Eileen Schwalbach, President of Mount Mary College, was named a recipient of the 2011 “Women Putting Their Stamp on Milwaukee” Award from the United States Postal Service (USPS). The 13th annual award recognizes women from the Metro Milwaukee Area with outstanding achievements in several fields. January 2011 -- Leona Knobloch-Nelson, Interior Design department chairperson, was recently named to the the Forty under 40 list by the Business Journal. The list highlights Milwaukee's future leaders.

Starving Artists Show® Moves Up the Ranks
January 2011 -- Mount Mary College Alumnae Association's annual Starving Artists Show® was recently ranked 61st on the list of Art Fair Source Book's Top 100 Fine Art Fairs in the United States for 2011. The Source Book publishes reviews and rankings of shows based on the gross sales of the show.

Women's Leadership Institute Director Speaks to Professional Women's Group
January, 2011 -- Yvonne Lumsden-Dill, Director of Mount Mary's Women's Leadership Institute, presented "Bringing Out the Leader in You: How Women Succeed Where Men Fail" at the January 27th meeting of the Professional Women's Development Network.
