Mount Mary Alumna Receives Teaching Award
OCTOBER 2013–-Lauren Boyd, a Mount Mary University alumna, received the Education
Deans of Greater Milwaukee (EDGM) Early Career in Teaching Award. Boyd is a second-grade
teacher at Milwaukee College Preparatory School where her students show outstanding
growth in math and reading. Student’s reading scores showed 134.6% growth while math
scores showed an impressive 155.8% growth. Boyd’s students also tested above the national
average in both of these subjects. The Early Career Award is presented as part of
EDGM’s Celebration of Teachers and Teaching event.
Boyd earned her teaching certificate through the Urban Education Fellows’ Program as well as her master’s in education from Mount Mary University.

Student Receives Prestigious Scholarship to Support Study Abroad Experience
JUNE 2013—For the third consecutive year, a Mount Mary student was awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Shaticia (Shay) Landry was one of 14 students from Wisconsin colleges and universities to receive the federally funded award, which supported her summer study abroad in Peru.
Arches Wins Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA) Awards
FEBRUARY 2013—Mount Mary’s Arches student newspaper and staff won several top honors at the WNA’s annual Collegiate Better Newspaper Contest. First place awards include: General Web Excellence for archesnews.com, Graphics – Branded for fantasy football and other graphics by Barbara Kolb, Sports Reporting for Shantae Chapman’s article “Angels plunge into special Olympics head first” and Best Advertisement for Barbara Kolb’s “Carizma” ad.
Justice Professor Recognized for Professional Success in The Business Journal
JANUARY 2013—Rachel Monaco-Wilcox, professor in the justice program, was named one of Milwaukee’s “40 Under 40” in The Business Journal. She is active in the fight against human trafficking and sexual violence. Most recently, she worked to facilitate healing and raise awareness through a three-part writing and healing series “Untold Stories.” Monaco-Wilcox was selected for this award from over 270 nominations.
Social Work Student Receives Prestigious Gilman Scholarship
NOVEMBER 2012—Bao Yang, a social work major who studied abroad at Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea, in spring 2013, received a $2,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to support her studies abroad. The Gilman scholarship is a highly prestigious nationwide scholarship competition. This is the second consecutive year a Mount Mary student has won this award.
Hockenbery and Kisler Win Teaching Excellence Awards
NOVEMBER 2012—Jennifer Hockenbery, a full-time professor of philosophy, and Helga Kisler, a part-time instructor in theology, won Mount Mary’s annual “Excellence in Teaching” awards. The awards are given to faculty who demonstrate innovative teaching techniques; knowledge of current developments, trends and research in her academic field; and dedication, enthusiasm and support of students’ personal, moral and intellectual growth.
Three Mount Mary Alumnae Honored for Professional Excellence
OCTOBER 2012—Three Mount Mary alumnae received the university’s Madonna Medal for Professional Excellence: Ann (Bonness) Angel, an English and education alumna and current Mount Mary professor; Mary (Sladky) Gramins, a history alumna and current Chair of the Theology Department at Woodlands Academy in Illinois; and Marie O’Brien, an MBA alumna as well as president and CEO of Enterforce, Inc. The annual award recognizes alumnae who excel in professional achievement and service to the community or to the college.
Two Recent Alumnae Receive Mount Mary Tower Award
OCTOBER 2012—Each year Mount Mary’s Tower Award for Excellence recognizes alumnae who have graduated in the past 15 years and exemplify the university’s core values. This year’s recipients are Maria (Kirschling) Guilbert, a 2002 graduate in hotel and restaurant management and business Administration, and Tina (Raasch) Prost, a 1999 graduate in interior design.
Soccer Players Win Top Honors
OCTOBER 2012 —Sophomore forward Emily Ristow won the Association of Division III Independent’s (AD3I) soccer Player of the Week honors for the week of October 15-21 after scoring seven goals in two games on a road trip to Illinois. Ristow is Mount Mary’s all-time leading scorer, with 30 goals. In September, AD3I named junior forward Rasika Perera Player of the Week for September 2-9.
Interior Design Student Named Student of the Year
JUNE 2012—Margaret Martinez, an interior design major, was named the International Interior Design Association Wisconsin Chapter’s 2012 Student Member of the Year.
Professor Selected for Mentoring Pilot Program
2012—Laurel End, behavioral sciences chair, was selected as one of 10 psychologists to participate as a mentor in the Society for the Teaching of Psychology’s STP Professional Development Mentoring Network pilot program.
Dietetics Graduate Student Earns Healthy Eating Grant
2012—Former dietetic intern and current graduate student Amy Griffen received a Kids Eat Right grant from the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) to implement health snacking and breakfast nutrition education in classrooms.
Mount Mary English Student Honor Society Wins Award
FEBRUARY 2012—Mount Mary’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English Honor Society, was recognized for 60 years of excellence at a national convention in New Orleans.
