Welcome to the School of Humanities

Kathleen DoughertyWelcome to the School of Humanities!

The School of Humanities houses many of the disciplines that form the core of our liberal arts foundation, including Communication, English, History, Philosophy, Theology, and World Languages. Study in the humanities provides our students with the opportunity to reflect upon what it means to live fully engaged human lives. We strive to educate women who are empowered through their intellectual engagement with the world to make it a better place—to bring about transformation in their own lives and those of others.

Courses in the humanities help students learn to:

  • Think critically, speak effectively, and write clearly.
  • Recognize and understand the historical foundations of our shared heritages.
  • Understand the stories and literatures that help us grow in empathy and better identify with one another.
  • Appreciate the central ideas and themes that have challenged our understanding of the transcendent.
  • Engage challenging moral problems with intellectual subtlety and conscientiousness.
  • Develop a global understanding through the study of another language or culture.

These are skills central to living well, but also skills essential to success in any career. The Humanities hold myriad options for study through majors, minors, and concentrations. A major in the Humanities is an excellent opportunity to hone your intellectual skills and prepare yourself for an ever-changing world.

You’ll find that Mount Mary’s commitment to a creative campus is thriving in the School of Humanities, whether through the scholarship and teaching methods of our faculty, course offerings, or extra-curricular activities. You can experience a “flipped” classroom, take courses that combine service learning and video production, study abroad and earn credit in a wide range of Humanities disciplines, write for our award-winning student news magazine, or participate in our annual Symposium of student scholarship.

Regardless of your interests, I’m confident you’ll find our programs and courses intellectually stimulating and personally engaging. As you explore your options, the Humanities faculty and I invite you to consider all the possibilities available to you.
