Careers in Justice

There is a great need for women professionals in all facets of the justice system. Students may choose to work in government, the private sector, or non-profits that serve the justice system. The government is one of the largest employers of people who work in the justice field. For example, in our state, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections employs nearly 14,000 people in hundreds of different types of jobs, and operates a $1 billion dollar budget.

On a national level, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook for 2008-09 indicates that employment in this area will be expanding greatly over the next 8 years, with job growth in the range of 9% to 28% for some of the representative positions in the justice field.

These are just a few examples of the types of careers available to those who pursue a degree in Justice. Students in the major are exposed to a variety of professional experiences throughout their coursework to help them develop a targeted area of employment. Internships in the field provide an excellent platform for career exploration. For example, if a student is interested in working with youth to prevent violence, she will be able to secure an internship with a premier agency that addresses that issue. The Mount Mary College Justice Major also provides excellent preparation for further study. Justice major graduates have gone on to pursue advanced degrees in subject areas such as law, leadership, criminal justice, public administration and psychology.
