Competitions, Awards and Scholarships Student Recognition: Each year recognition is given for outstanding designs in a variety of categories in conjunction with the annual student designer fashion show. Cash and product awards sponsored by various manufacturers and retailers are determined by a professional jury, which qualifies garments for the show. Mount Mary students tend to do very well in regional, national, and international competitions. They have brought home an impressive array of awards and have been featured in a variety of professional publications. Recent winners include:
ITAA: October 31 through November 4, 2006, International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) design exhibition in San Antonio, Texas. Designs of five of the seven Mount Mary students who entered were accepted. Katherine Stephens, who will receive a certificate in fashion design, won patternmaking software and the "Best Patternmaking Solution to a Design Problem" award for "Romance Falls." Read more. Chicago Fashion Group: On Friday, November 10, 2006, Mount Mary faculty and students attended the Chicago Fashion Group Career Day and Competition. In June a professional jury chose five Mount Mary student designers as finalists for this rigorous design competition. Ten schools from throughout the Midwest were represented in the final judging
and fashion show on November 10. Mount Mary College won awards in three of the six competition categories.
ITAA: Kristina Sankauskiene won a two week internship with Zandra Rhodes Fashion Group International: Adrian Johnson received a $2,000 scholarship for her tailored suit in the Fashion Group International (FGI) Design Competition. Other student finalists in the FGI Design Competition include Kristina Sankauskiene and Dawn Thao Yang in the dress category and Melissa Ebel in the collection category. Annual Competition: To further motivate their students to strive for excellence, the Fashion Department holds an annual competition for continuing students each summer. Participants submit design illustration for initial feedback and then work independently to pattern and construction. The designs are critiqued by competition organizers Sandra Tonz and Aeran Park of the fashion faculty.
