Competitions, Awards and Scholarships

Student Recognition: Each year recognition is given for outstanding designs in a variety of categories in conjunction with the annual student designer fashion show. Cash and product awards sponsored by various manufacturers and retailers are determined by a professional jury, which qualifies garments for the show.

Mount Mary students tend to do very well in regional, national, and international competitions. They have brought home an impressive array of awards and have been featured in a variety of professional publications.

On Friday, November 13, Katie Zimmer won a $2,500 scholarship in the dress category at the 2009 Annual Chicago Fashion Group Career Day. Emily Treolo, Sara Terell, Paxia Vang, and Becky Krist also represented Mount Mary's Fashion Department as finalists.

Annual Competition: To further motivate their students to strive for excellence, the Fashion Department holds an annual competition for continuing students each summer. Participants submit design illustration for initial feedback and then work independently to pattern and construction. The designs are critiqued by competition organizers Sandra Tonz and Aeran Park of the fashion faculty.
