JoAnn Early Macken, M.F.A. A faculty member with Mount Mary College for several years, Macken is an accomplished writer. She has written more than one hundred nonfiction books for school and library publishers. Macken’s published rhyming picture books include Cats on Judy, Sing-Along Song which was inspired by her son’s singing, and Waiting Out the Storm. Her poems have been published in Cricket, Ladybug, Highlights for Children, and the anthology Stories from Where We Live: The Great Lakes. She earned her M.F.A. in Writing for Children and Young Adults at Vermont College. Recent News: JoAnn's pubilcation entitled Flip, Float, Fly: Seeds on the Move was featured in summer of 2012 by Reading Rainbow to illustrate their new application for the iPad. JoAnn received the Growing Good Kids – Excellence in Children’s Literature Award from The American Horticultural Society and National Junior Master Gardener Program for her children’s book, Flip, Float, Fly! Seeds on the Move. The nonfiction picture book, published by Holiday House, describes the many ways seeds travel. The award was presented at the 2009 National Children & Youth Garden Symposium in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 24, 2009 at Case Western Reserve University. JoAnn has received the 2010 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award in the preschool and early school years categories for Waiting Out the Storm. Read more.
