| In addition to the 12 credits of core education courses, students in the Special Emphasis in English take 12 credits of English electives. Students may choose the English courses they wish. Here are some of the courses offered recently:
- Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature
- Film as Literature
- Psychology and Literature
- Native American Literature
- Teaching Writing Through Young Adult Literature
- Script Writing
- Writing for Publication
- Contemporary Minority Writers
- William Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw in Performance
Teachers in the English Special Emphasis also do an action research project in their English classrooms for the final six credits of the program. They choose to implement an instructional or assessment strategy, such as portfolio assessment or develop a curriculum project, such as a unit on a particular novel or an integrated unit that combines literature and history.
