Dietitians: The Food and Nutrition Professionals
The Dietetics Department offers two paths for becoming a Registered Dietitian. Registered Dietitian (RD) is the nationally recognized credential for dietitians and is granted by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Preparation for becoming an RD includes both classroom learning and hands-on training in a supervised practice setting. The Mount Mary College Dietetic Internship provides 1200 hours of supervised practice to students who have completed the classroom portion of their training by earning a four year degree in a nutrition/dietetics related field from another university. Upon completion of the Dietetic Internship students are eligible to take the registration exam for dietitians. The Mount Mary College Coordinated Program in Dietetics combines the classroom portion and the 1200 hours of supervised practice in a single program that can be completed in four years. Upon completion of the Coordinated Program students earn a BS in dietetics and are eligible to take the registration exam for dietitians. In addition the Dietetics Department offers a Master of Science in Dietetics Program. Students who are RDs or who are in a Dietetic Internship may apply to the Graduate Program. The Graduate Program is specifically designed to offer dietetic practitioners the opportunity to increase knowledge depth and breadth in a variety of areas of dietetic practice but is not a means for becoming eligible for taking the registration exam. |
