Music Department
Mount Mary's music department has a history of educating music teachers in kindergarten through secondary education levels. Mount Mary promotes a holistic atmosphere in which students are provided with information and experiences necessary for the understanding, enjoyment and performance of music.
While enhancing the quality of campus life and events, the department offers musical experiences appropriate to meet the needs and interests of the individual today and in future years as teacher, performer or discriminating consumer of music.
Program offerings -
Music Education: General - Choral
This music education major, leading to certification by Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, is for the student with a background in music who enjoys working with others and sharing music with them. To become a knowledgeable and resourceful teacher-musician, the student will complete a sequence of music courses combined with education department requirements and capped with general studies. An internship of one semester of student teaching in elementary, middle, and secondary public and private schools can lead to certification. The college has an excellent placement record for graduates in public and private schools.
Student Designed Major
Mount Mary offers a flexible course of study compatible with the interests, abilities, and goals of the student. The student will seek the sponsorship of two faculty members and prepare a rationale and proposal for the major to be approved by the departments involved and the Provost. If choosing a double major, the student must complete a separate set of at least 24 credits for each major.
Music Minor
Mount Mary offers a 20 credit minor for a student who wishes to enhance another major or her personal life.
Post-baccalaureate Certification
Students who hold a bachelor's degree and a musical background may earn a certificate in music education by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Students must fulfill all music and education department requirements.
