English Department

Why study English?
Graduates in English have the skills needed to land jobs and advance their careers. Employers routinely cite the ability to work with language as key to a job candidate’s success. Specifically, employers look for workers with strong skills in:

  • Writing and speaking
  • Critical thinking and reasoning
  • Reading and analyzing
  • Assembling and organizing information

Why Mount Mary College?
The small class size and personal attention from the faculty support each student’s academic and personal success. Your coursework will focus on literature, writing, theory, and linguistics, allowing you to explore many genres and to develop your analytical, creative, technical, journalistic, and persuasive writing skills. As a Mount Mary English major, your interests and talents will be nurtured as you develop imaginative thinking, clear writing and communication skills, and a strong literary background by reading historically and culturally important texts.

Our majors have the opportunity to write for the student newspaper, publish in campus literary magazines, present at conferences, participate in the national English honor society, and complete internships -- opportunities reserved for the few at large institutions.
