Student Experience -

Chloe Hernandez presents her research on Hispanic mothers during a poster session at the 2011 Annual Central States Communication Associate Conference.Chloe Hernandez, a communication major (2012), presented her research findings at the Central States Communication Association Conference (CSCA) in April, 2011, in Milwaukee. CSCA is a professional, academic organization that promotes the communication discipline.

Delivered in a poster session at the conference, "Hispanic Mothers & the Home: La Verdad Desconocida," discussed research Chloe conducted on single, Hispanic mothers and how they communicate independence to their children. Her research targeted an under-researched population and a rarely touched topic in family communication literature.

The opportunity to present at the CSCA conference was the result of a rigorous application process that involved a pre-conference screening by a panel of academic reviewers. Of all the student papers submitted, only 32% were accepted for presentation at the conference. Chloe was the first Mount Mary student to have a paper accepted to the CSCA conference.

Chloe, pictured at the conference with her presentation, enjoyed the experience and felt conducting the research was challenging, but worth it. She also enjoyed the opportunity to discuss her research with several scholars, including Lynn Turner, one of the premier family researchers in the field.
