College in the Community

Since 1998, Mount Mary College has been offering the College in the Community program. College in the Community consists of partnerships with two community agencies - Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services and Journey House.

Journey House serves Milwaukee's near south side and Milwaukee Achiever is located in the northwest part of the city.

Classes are taught by Mount Mary, Journey House and Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services faculty, and are computer-intensive with a strong emphasis on language arts. The College in the Community coursework provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to help advance their educational and employment opportunities.

Contact Amanda Ritchey, 414-258-4810 (x265), for further details.

In 2009, Mount Mary College’s “College in the Community” received the Program Innovation Award from ProLiteracy America, the nation’s largest adult literacy organization. The award recognizes new and innovative strategies that are improving the quality of literacy services offered to adult learners.

According to David Harvey, President and CEO of ProLiteracy, “Mount Mary’s ‘College in the Community’ program represents a national model the President would like to see in many more communities.
I applaud the unique partnership between a literacy program and post-secondary institution that gives
adult learners college credit, while using a curriculum that includes computer literacy,” he added.

More information on “College in the Community” and Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services can be found online. Visit proliteracy.org for more information on ProLiteracy, the conference, and the award.
