Schedule -
BOOT Camp was held on Mount Mary's campus from June 21 through July 2. Classes were Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A typical day's schedule is as follows:
8:30 to 10 a.m. - Class
10 to 10:15 a.m. - Break
10:15 to 11:45 a.m. - Class
11:50 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. - Lunch
1 to 2:30 p.m. - Class
2:30 to 3 p.m. - Break and Snack
3 to 4:30 p.m. - Class

Classes
Each morning class is one and half hours. During the morning session students attended two of the following classes:
- FSH 022
Introduction to Textile Design with Adobe Photoshop
Mai Lor, Instructor
T-shirts, scarves, drapery, sheets, and gift wrap are just a few of the products that need textile/surface designers. In this course, students will create original pattern/print designs for fashion and interiors using Adobe Photoshop CS4. Final art will be printed on fabric paper. Emphasis is on creative use of the software, awareness of industry trends, and color combinations.

Introduction to the Fashion Design Industry
Quincy Russell, Instructor
What does a fashion designer do every day? This course teaches you how the fashion business works and includes field trips to virtual museums or websites, stores, and fabric sources. Students will create a style presentation board as their final project.
- ART 022
Creative Fiber Design/ Color Theory
Barb Chappell, Instructor
Students will experiment with color theory in action… dyeing wool fibers, silk and cotton fabrics and a variety of yarns to assemble into a mixed media fiber piece. Techniques will include felting, dyeing, stitching, manipulation and embellishments to create one of a kind fiber art work.

Illustration/3-D Bookmaking
Nancy Lohmiller and Ann Thomas, Instructors
In the Illustrations class, students will learn to develop a story through image and bring their story to life using a variety of basic illustration techniques. Students will learn flow of image from page to page and styles of drawing from realism to cartooning. No drawing experience necessary.
In the Bookmaking class, students will learn the art of handmade books. Using a variety of book formats, students will learn construction formats of book arts. Collaborating with storytelling or creating their own style, students will explore a variety of methods and materials to create a one-of-a-kind book/journal.
The Afternoon Session is three hours. Students chose to take one three hour class or two one and a half hour classes as outlined below:

Sewing for Fashion Designer, Beginner
3 hour studio
Jessica Frantal, Instructor
Students will learn the in's and out's of basic machine sewing techniques while designing and creating a garment for themselves. Students will choose between three different skirt styles and a variety of fabrics to make their own unique creation.

Sewing for Fashion Designer, Intermediate/ Advanced
3 hour studio

Students will create an edgy layer ready sleeveless jacket with updated denim construction techniques, including distressing techniques, top stitching, and hardware selection.
- ART 024
Digital Photography
1 ½ hour studio
Paul Calhoun, Instructor
This introductory course in photography will help students explore basic camera usage, portraiture, landscape, and creative aspects of photography as an art form. Students will learn to look at and explore the world in new ways, and begin developing basic skills and techniques in Photoshop. Class will be designed to enhance the creative abilities of each student while developing a sound foundation in photographic technique.

Printmaking
1 ½ hour studio

The introduction to printmaking explores basic processes of printmaking through monoprint, relief, and calligraphy. Various techniques will engage painting and drawing skills sets as well as plate making via surface and textural manipulations. Assignments seek to promote the understanding of the use of color, as well as the importance of composition through shape and texture.

Paul Calhoun
Paul Calhoun's photographs have been exhibited and published in New York, Chicago, Europe and the Far East, and his work supported by numerous public and private foundations including the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In nearly 30 years as a photographic instructor, he has taught basic to advanced courses on the undergraduate, graduate, high school, and middle school levels. Currently he is working on an extended project of oral histories and photographs of combat veterans that will be exhibited in Chicago and Madison I this year, with his son Ben Calhoun, a reporter for National Public Radio. |

Barbara Chappell
Barbara Chappell is a fiber artist specializing in hand-woven textiles for fashion and home, part time instructor in Arts Division at Mount Mary College for 10 years (Textiles, Color Theory, Fiber/Fabric Design, Fabric Manipulation), and Business owner DBA Fiberwood Studio Ltd. Since 1999. She has BS Textile Design UW Madison and MS Textiles and Clothing UW Stout. A fiber art studio and store featuring fibers, yarns, accessories and instruction in weaving, knitting, felting and other fiber art techniques. President of the Wisconsin Designer Crafts Council since 2007. |

Jessica Frantal
Jessica Frantal is an accomplished designer and own custom costuming business – Mad Scientist Designs. She has B.A from Mount Mary College and began sewing as a child, taught by her mother (also a fashion designer). Those early sewing lessons spawned her lifetime passion for costume creation. When she's not sewing (which is rarely), Jessica spend her time playing video games, knitting and passing her skills along to others. |

Kari Garon
Kari Garon holds the following degrees, a BFA in Painting and Drawing, a BFA in Print and Narrative Forms, a Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution Certificate, and an MS in Cultural Foundations of Education (in progress) at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has been developing and implementing collaborative projects for high school teen artist residents as well as developing and implementing teen night collage workshops. She has run silkscreen and stencil workshop and careers in the arts workshops and assisted UW-Milwaukee TRIO & Pre-College Mini-Course Program, as an instructor. |

Mai Lor
Mai Lor is a textile designer at Kohl’s Corporation in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. She has her B.A. from Mount Mary College. Her designs are inspired from current trends, art exhibitions and mother earth. What she loves most about her job is seeing her creation on other people because it brings a sense of personal joy to the customer. Mai also has a passion to teach students who are curious and dedicated to learning textile design. |

Quincy E. Russell
Quincy E. Russell, Senior Menswear Designer at Kohl’s Corporation, is a BFA graduate of OTIS college of Art and Design in Los Angeles. He has spent the last 12 years in New York City where he studied at F.I.T. and earned respect as a designer working for many of today’s most esteemed name brands including, Vans, Kenneth Cole, Express Men’s and Structure (Sears). Quincy has a simple approach to design, his goal is to give each and every customer the opportunity to be confident and fashion forward. He is looking forward to giving back to the fashion community as part of this year’s Fashion Boot Camp. |

Ann Thomas
Ann Thomas is a freelance graphic designer/ illustrator, part time instructor at Mount Mary College, and widely recognized for her fine architectural style renderings of homes, businesses and landmark buildings in pen and ink, colored pencil, watercolor and acrylic. She graduated from Milwaukee Area Technical College in Commercial Art and Mount Mary College in Graphic Design. She recently illustrated a children’s Christmas book entitled “What Can I Give Jesus” with author Cheryl Kirking. In addition to her graphic design background, Ann has a passion for detail and texture. Ann is also known for her detailed images used in children's books, greeting cards and other print media. |

Sandra Tonz
Sandra Tonz is an instructor in Fashion Department at Mount Mary College. She holds a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin–Stout. Sandra owned custom design and teaching studio, Needle Art Studio for twenty years while she was teaching at Waukesha County Technical College (Central American Students Program, Design and Entrepreneur Program, and Continuing Education Program-Fashion). She teaches most of advanced level of construction courses including Pattern Construction III, Advanced Pattern Construction, Special Occasion Apparel, and Collection I. |
