"Mount Mary goes to the UN"
by Sister Shawnee Sykes, March 1 - 12, 2010

The 2010 UN Commission on Status of Women (CSW) takes place March 1-12. A group from Mount Mary College and School Sisters of Notre Dame are attending.

The Mount Mary College participants include myself; Julie Tatlock, adjunct instructor in the History Department; and students Leah Davis, Alyssa Olson, Ivy Padula and Cheryl von Asten.

CSW participation is a requirement for the Mount Mary students’ class on the United Nations. During the fall semester, the class studied the structure and history of the United Nations and studied the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action which is being reviewed at the meeting.

Julie said this about the class, “The students learned a lot about women’s issues in other parts of the world and how complex these things can get when you consider the cultural aspects of a region. They are excited to be part of the actual workings of the United Nations and to meet women from all over the world.

This past Thursday I attended a guidance counselor workshop in Rolling Meadows, IL. The workshop, sponsored by WAICU (Wisconsin Assoc. for Independent Colleges and Universities), included all 20 WAICU member colleges in attendance. We each got the chance to share information about our campuses with guidance counselors from across the Chicagoland area.

Guidance counselors rotated through 10 round robin sessions to learn about as many campuses as time would allow. After each session a bell would ring to let us know it was time to rotate to the next group. One of the counselors pointed out that it oddly reminded them of speed dating! Nevertheless it was a great event with lots of great conversations.

FAFSA’s, Assessments, Registration…. Oh My!!! If you haven’t received them already, newly accepted students should be expecting registration materials and financial aid award letters in the mail in the next coming weeks. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to file your FAFSA online. The financial aid office is processing award letters as we speak, so the sooner you submit your FAFSA, the sooner you can receive your financial aid package. Also as you receive assessment and registration materials, be sure to sign up as soon as possible. Hard to believe, but yes, soon you will be picking out your fall classes!!!

This week is the final week of classes before SPRING BREAK! How exciting! Not only are students on campus looking forward to rest and relaxation but some are choosing to spend their breaks serving those less fortunate. Through campus ministry, some students have chosen to spend their breaks in locations like New Orleans and West Virginia serving the poor in the community. Look out for some bloggers reflections on these trips in the coming weeks.

Recently, we held an Information Session for the Masters in Business Administration program (MBA).  This is an excellent opportunity for individuals to learn more about a Mount Mary MBA and a delight for me to meet new and interesting women and men looking to advance their education.  Attendees comment on the importance of holding such programs.  One recent attendee emailed me the following, “I am glad I attended the session.  I took away a lot of information for the MBA program, which will help me make an informed decision.  The time was well spent and worth investing.”  We are happy to offer these opportunities.

The MBA program began a little over two years ago and will graduate its first class this May.  Check out our video with interviews of the graduating MBA class and be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, May 8 - our next MBA Information Session.

Well, I would venture to say that the Prospective Student Overnight was a success! For those of you that don't know- the Prospective Student Overnight is an event every spring for students that have been accepted to Mount Mary for the following fall. The event gives prospective students a chance to come sit in on classes, talk to students, professors, and coaches, and spend the night with current students in the residence hall.

As a host student, I met my wonderful prospective student (Hi, Brittany!) for dinner and then we went to the First Thursday Movie Night (which is a pre-release movie night that happens -surprise surprise- every first Thursday and is sponsored by Student Engagement). After watching "New Moon" we attended the root beer float kegger and hung out in the lounge with other current students and their guests. The rest of the night was pretty chill- just getting to know each other, answering questions, girl talk. There was cookie baking and even taco making going on around eleven pm and talk of mattress surfing (don't worry Sister Georgeann, it didn't happen). Oh life in the dorms!

If you are considering Mount Mary, and have applied and been accepted, I would encourage you to consider attending the overnight next spring. Its a great way to get a feel for campus and meet new people. If you are a current student living in the resident hall I would encourage you to host a prospective student next spring! Again, a great way to meet new people, be involved in res life, and, if your student decides to attend MMC, you see them around campus in the fall! Super fun. And of course, if you are a current student but do not live in the res hall I would encourage you to get involve through Student Affairs and Student Engagement- or just show up to the evening activities! They are open to everyone.
