Behavioral Science Department

A major in behavioral science prepares students for work in social and human services, business, government-in any area, in fact, where knowledge of people in the context of their societies is helpful. The skill and knowledge gained through study in this field provide students with a solid background to enter the work force or to begin graduate study.

Behavioral science is also an excellent second major for students in occupational therapy, social work, art therapy, communication, philosophy, theology and business administration. Students who wish to pursue a career as a professional anthropologist, psychologist, or sociologist will require an advanced degree.

Majors:

  • Behavioral science provides students with an understanding of individuals as well as the social structures affecting their lives. See curriculum.
  • Psychology/behavioral science combines the advantages of the interdisciplinary behavioral science major with a concentration in coursework to prepare students for graduate studies in psychology or other careers. See curriculum.

Both majors prepare students for a variety of career opportunities with coordinated courses, research, and application in three related fields: anthropology, psychology and sociology.

Anthropology/Sociology Minor: This unique minor prepares students to better understand culture and society. Through the courses required for the minor, students learn to analyze how humans organize social structures and what that means for the emergence of new cultural characteristics. Being able to make sense of diverse populations is an essential skill for the employee in the age of globalization. Understanding human practices prepares students to take effective leadership in a variety of professional fields or graduate programs. See curriculum.
