Job Outlook for Art Therapy Majors

Art therapy is an expanding field. Employment opportunities continue to increase as art therapy becomes more recognized by professionals, work settings, and clients. Art therapy program graduates find employment in both full- and part-time positions. Earnings vary by geographical area and depend on the type of practice and job responsibilities.

Those earning certification from the American Art Therapy Association, Inc. (AATA) have distinct advantages in obtaining employment. Art therapists with doctoral degrees and state licensure are qualified to conduct private practice.

Art therapists often work as part of a therapeutic team in a variety of clinical, educational and rehabilitative settings, including:
  • community art centers
  • after school programs
  • alternative schools
  • hospitals
  • correctional facilities
  • elder care facilities
